Hives

Heat and Hives

Heat and hives are related in more ways than one. Often fever itself will cause a hives outbreak, but that is not all. One of the main conditions dealing with heat and hive is cholinergic urticaria, in which the patient really breaks out in response to sweat. This form of heat hives can be caused by simply getting angry or getting stressed out.

Localized heat hives is the rarest condition that causes hives from heat. It is however, one of the most sensitive and can be tested simply by the application of heat on the skin. These hives generally don’t last more than an hour though.

You may be wondering if it is heat rash or hives that you are affected by. Most likely it is a rash, as a rash by definition is any inflammation of the skin, but it may or may not be a hives-related condition. Looking at pictures on the web may help you decide if it is hives or heat rash, but you should still seek help from a dermatologist to determine if it is really heat rash and hives. You can find heat rash and hives pictures on Emedicine.com and Cholinergicurticaria.net.

Heat Induced Hives

Conventionally, heat hives treatment involves the use of antihistamines. Most antihistamines can be bought over the counter, although stronger types are prescribed.

Hydroxyzine, Claritin, Zyrtec, Clarinex, and Benadryl are the most commonly used.

Most people try to control hives/heat reactions by avoiding situations where they could be exposed to a heat stimulus. Some people use exercise to raise their body’s tolerance to temperature changes. In addition, acupuncture is one of the leading alternative treatments for hives heat rash.

In some cases doctors treat hives heat rash with anabolic steroids or corticosteroids. These are only used in more severe cases. Sometimes anabolic steroids will bring about remission or temporary relief, but not always. Corticosteroids are usually very helpful. Prednisone, in particular, is good for regulating the immune system. This is great because the immune system is said to be one of the main ‘heat hives’ causes.

Beta blockers are sometimes prescribed to inhibit the nervous symptom’s “flight or fight or flight” response (Cholinergicurticaria.net, 2011). This is sometimes effective, but has been known to have harmful side effects. So, if prescribed be sure to talk to your doctor to weigh out potential risks. Other prescribed medications for urticaria have been known to have side effects as well. Make sure you listen to your doctor but be involved and knowledgeable as well.

Hives Urticaria

Heat Urticaria is an extremely rare condition in which hives occur as a result of heat exposure. This condition may also be referred to generalized heat urticaria or cholinergic urticaria. Cholinergic urticaria occurs as the result of a hot bath or shower or from exercise. This form of heat urticaria is brought about by a heat stimulus, but the reaction is actually due to sweat.

There is another type of heat urticaria that is less common. Localized heat urticaria is one of the rarest forms of physical urticarias. It is where well-defined lesions appear on the sites of the heat exposure.

Heat Induced Urticaria

All of these heat induced urticaria conditions are considered physical forms of urticaria. According to allergies.about.com, up to 20 to 30% of chronic urticaria cases have some sort of physical trigger. These heat induced urticaria forms can be triggered by any increase in body temperature.

Cholinergic especially can be caused by anything that causes the body to sweat; even things like spicy foods, stress, or anger is enough to start an outbreak.  Sometimes they are caused by simply the temperature change of going from a cool area to a warm area. Whatever the case may be, preventative measures should be taken in order to avoid exposure to heat stimuli.

Heat Urticaria Treatment

Heat urticaria is usually treated effectively by antihistamines to control the conditions and eliminating such exposures help to prevent hives. Corticosteriods and anabolic steroids are also used. Some patients with this condition are desensitized with hot bath therapy, but this should only be tried under medical supervision. UVB therapy, sweat and exercise therapy, and diet changes may also be used to help in the management of heat urticaria.

Cholinergicurticaria.net offers non-medical options for cholinergic urticaria treatment. They may work for other forms of heat induced urticaria as well, just be sure to consult your physician before trying any new forms of treatment. The treatment options are as follows:

  • Avoiding situations that cause hives and/or rapid cooling
  • Wearing appropriate clothing by not overdressing
  • Meditation, prayer, or mental relaxation may help people cope and relieve stress
  • Using cooling sprays, ice packs, and other materials to resolve oncoming attacks
  • Avoidance of compounds such as aspirin and alcohol that may make the condition worse

Exercise and sweat therapy that may induce small attack, but in the long run limit severe attacks by making the body adjust histamine levels. It is said to be good for mild cases, but too risky for severe cases.

Hives Temperature

Having a hives temperature of over 103 degrees F can be very dangerous, especially in children. Treating a hives temperature can be tricky. Your first instinct will be to give your child a pain reliever, if you do make sure that it does not contain aspirin because this can cause Reye’s syndrome.

Reye’s syndrome is a deadly disease that strikes fast and without warning. It can occur in children, teens, or adults. According to reyessyndrome.org it can affects all of the organs, but it affects the brain and the liver in particular. The site continues stating “Research has established a link between Reye’s Syndrome and the use of aspirin and other salicylate containing medications, over the counter products, and topical use products.”

A hives temperature or fever is a sign of illness or infection. If your child is prone to hives outbreaks a little prevention can go a long way. Teach your child how to avoid suspected allergens and avoid fevers by helping your child learn to wash their hands often.

Hives Temperature Changes

Extreme temperatures of either hot or cold can bring outbreaks of hives in some people. Cholinergic urticaria is a condition brought about by a hypersensitive reaction to body heat. The symptoms of this hives temperature condition follow any stimulus that causes sweat. These include:

  • Exercise
  • Heat from the sun
  • Saunas
  • Hot Showers
  • Spicy foods (which increase body temperature)
  • Stress
  • Blushing
  • Anger

Sometimes people only have symptoms during the winter month. This is because their body temperature rises when suddenly exposed to heat. According to Wikipedia.org, “exercising to break a sweat before the onset of cold weather, and through the winter months may reduce the symptoms greatly.”

Cold urticaria may also occur. This means that the body reacts to cold temperatures.  Symptoms occur soon after the skin is exposed to a sudden drop in air temperature or cold water. Some exposures can be very dangerous. For example, in this type of urticaria swimming in cold water can cause a severe reaction that leads to fainting, shock, or even death (Mayoclinic.com, 2011).

Out of heat urticaria is more prevalent than cold urticaria. In most cases the causes of these reactions is idiopathic (unknown). In some cases it is caused by an underlying condition or disease. Antihistamines are usually prescribed for hives, but are not as affective in the type of hives that occur because of temperature change. Hives-treatment.com offers some solutions to hives temperature situations. If you have reactions to:

  • Sweat: get warm quickly by drying the skin
  • Cold weather: avoid walks in the cold
  • Chlorinated or cold water: try taking an anti-allergic medicine before entering the pool

Hives and Pain

Hives pain is not normal and usually hives and pain is a sign that another condition is present. For example, hives with join pain is a sign of urticarial vasculitis. Hives and pain in the abdomen is a sign of angioedema. Hives and chest pain could be related to a serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.  Read this article to learn more about hives and pain.

Hives and Joint Pain

Joint pain and hives accompanied by fever is a sign of another condition called urticarial vasculitis. This condition is much like urticaria (hives) in fact sometimes it is hard to tell the difference with the naked eye. Urticarial vasculitis is a condition in which the blood vessels in the skin are inflamed. These hives last much longer and the area stays red after the hives are gone. In rare occasions these hives have indicated lupus or cancer (Aafa.org, 2005). If you have hives joint pain, make sure and avoid medications that contain aspirin, because you can make the hives much worse.

Hives Stomach Pain

Hives and stomach pain is a sign of angioedema. Agioedema is similar to hives except when this reaction is triggered the capillaries dilate and leak fluid deeper into the skin. Swelling can occur in the lips and the larynx, or in the lining of the stomach, which causes the abdominal pain. Hives may also form on the outside of the body. If you have hives and abdominal pain, make sure and tell your doctor. Angioedema is a very serious condition, because it can cause sudden swelling of the larynx which can block the airways and create an emergency situation.

Hives Chest Pain

As was stated above, chest pain and hives is a sign of another very serious condition called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that happens quickly and involves the whole body. Any allergic reaction can trigger anaphylaxis, but the most common allergies are to drugs, food, or insect bites and stings.

Symptoms can develop within seconds or minutes. Symptoms of this condition are most commonly hives and swelling of the skin. Other symptoms include abnormal or high-pitched breathing sounds, abnormal pain or cramping, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, chest pains and much more.

Many people that have had an anaphylaxis attack have known of their allergy and have had an allergic reaction to the substance before. One of the scariest things about this condition is that some people aren’t even aware that they have an allergy before they experience a severe attack such as this. That means this first attack could be both unexpected and fatal.

Hives (Urticaria) and Anxiety

Can anxiety cause hives? Urticaria and anxiety, or rather hives and anxiety, are linked. However, hives are not caused by anxiety. Overall, hives are caused because of an over-active immune system. In other words, the problem is already there, but it takes a certain ‘trigger’ to cause hives to manifest themselves. Anxiety can be one of these triggers. This is why people say that you can get hives from anxiety.

Since anxiety and hives are linked in this way, it is important to avoid stressful situations if you are prone to hives. Yet, situations that cause anxiety are not always avoidable. Therefore, preventative measures must be taken.

Simply, taking a cool shower before stressful situations can curve hives anxiety symptoms because cool showers release the histamines that have built up in the body. Taking a slightly larger dose of antihistamines when anxiety or hives are to be expected can help as well. Finally, eating large amounts of quercetin or excess Vitamin C may stop and embarrassing hives and anxiety incident from occurring.

Hives Anxiety

Charlotte-anxiety-and-depression-treatment.com suggests getting into a dermatological program that is paired with psychotherapy. Many holistic dermatologists realize the connection between the body and the mind and can help you in reducing your stress as well. Other things that can help reduce hives and anxiety are sleeping on a schedule, eating healthily, and exercising lightly on a daily basis.

In cases of chronic hives, or urticaria and anxiety, the site also suggests keeping notes on when you have skin outbreaks and listing what life stresses could be connected. While you review this list, you should ask yourself how you spend your time and if it is consistent with your priorities. You should also consider who you spend your time with and if they deplete you or add to your life. Finally, some evidence suggests that people that do not express their feelings well on a regular basis are more prone to hives. Could this pertain to you? If so, learning to express your feeling in appropriate ways could be helpful.

In no ways should you have to deal with hives and anxiety on your own; you should seek help from your physician or dermatologist, especially in cases of urticaria and stress. Local therapists can also teach you important techniques for dealing with stress. Some things that you can also try are meditation, yoga exercises, self-hypnosis, or spending more time on personal hobbies.

Bee Sting Hives

The type of reaction a person has differs from person to person. In bee stings, for example, a person may break out in bee sting hives all over, while another barely has any swelling around the sting. Anaphylaxis is one of the most serious reactions. This reaction occurs with a quick onset and could be fatal if treatment is not prompt.

Honeybee stingers are usually left behind after the initial sting. Pinching the stinger in order to remove it may actually inject more venom in the skin. This is why it is best to remove the stinger with a knife edge or to flick it out of the skin with a finger nail (Medicinenet.com, 2011).

Many people use epinephrine to avoid the effects of bee stings and symptoms like bee sting hives. Self-injectable devices such as Epi-Pen, and ANA-kit are available. It only contains one dose, but that may keep you from having an anaphylaxis reaction or getting hives from bee sting venom. In addition to epinephrine oral antihistamines may also reduce the symptoms caused by the reaction.

Severe Reactions & Treatment

According to the Mayoclinic.com, it has been found that people who have had a severe allergic reaction to a bee sting will have a 30 to 60 percent chance of anaphylaxis next time their stung. The website suggests getting immunotherapy or taking other such preventative measures before getting stung again. So, if you have had a severe reaction it is best to talk to your doctor, an allergist, or an immunologist for advice and discussion.

Hives are one of the symptoms of an anaphylaxis attack. It is suggested that you treat it as an emergency, even if you have only a couple of the symptoms. So, if you get bee sting hives it may be best to seek medical treatment just to be sure. The following are other symptoms of anaphylaxis:

  • Skin reactions that are not localized to the sting area
  • Flushed or pale skin
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the throat or tongue
  • A weak and rapid pulse
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Loss of consciousness

Doctorsecrets.com suggests using baking soda or ammonia to reduce the pain of a bee sting. This actually will change the acidity of the sting site. Using a paste of meat tenderizer may also help to ‘digest’ the chemicals. Taking ibuprophen and antihistamines will help reduce swelling and pain. The website also recommends going straight to the hospital if you have any type of bee sting allergy at all. This includes bee sting hives.

Natural Cure for Hives

Instead of relying on conventional methods to cure hives, people are beginning to look for techniques that may provide a natural cure for hives.  This is not surprising.  A natural cure for hives seems to have a better chance at overall success than any conventional method of treatment.  This is because natural cures, such as acupuncture and oriental medicine, address the underlying imbalances that cause the condition.  In other words, they are not just curing the symptoms but also fixing the problem at its source.

One natural cure for hives that has been proven to work time and time again is acupuncture.  Not only does it help to cure the current symptoms, but people have found that it sometimes helps to stop it from recurring.  Acupuncture and herbal medicines have been known to be used as a natural cure for hives and other skin conditions dating back to 3 AD.  Commonly used acupuncture points are spleen 10, located above the top inner corner of the knee cap, and large intestine 11 which is located in the depression at the outer part of the elbow crease.  This of course can vary from person to person.

Oriental Medicine & Hives

According to Acufinder.com, “In Oriental medicine, an outbreak of hives is described as wind invading the skin and the meridians, causing itching and swelling.”  The article goes on to say that if the eruption are red it indicates that wind and heat are involved, when they are white or pink the diagnosis will be wind-cold invading the skin.  This diagnosis will determine which herbal medicines and acupuncture points are used and what dietary or lifestyle changes must take place.

Dittany, spirodela, red peony, honeysuckle and mint are some of the oriental herbs that might be used.  Other oriental treatments include yoga, meditation, and cupping.  Cupping is a natural cure from hives that is much like an acupuncture treatment.  It is meant to help with blood circulation underneath the skin.

Diet is vital when it comes to trying to heal your body.  Mindbodybasics.com lays out the type of foods you should eat when trying to cure skin conditions.  It states, “Healthy skin is directly dependent of the amount of vitamin A in our diet.  Vitamin A acts as an antioxidant to neutralize harmful elements in our skin” the article goes on to say that Vitamin A is found in vegetable that have a deep orange color.  The following foods are recommended to be added to your diet:

  • Carrots
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Plums
  • Salmon
  • Walnuts
  • Canola Oil
  • Flax Seed
  • Olive Oil
  • Whole Wheat Bread
  • Brown Rice
  • Turkey
  • Tuna
  • Brazil Nuts
  • Green Tea
  • Water
